History of State Street

When the Transcontinental Railroad was completed in 1869, Utah was named "The Crossroads of the West." State Street in Salt Lake City soon became a vital part of Utah's commerce.

The “official entrance” to the city, State Street was built wide enough to turn around a team of oxen. Today State Street has become a corridor where faith, business, education, government, and culture have flourished.

The City has always had the best interests of State Street in mind. In 2018, the Life on State Plan identified multiple goals to develop this important corridor into a gateway jewel.  Please join us in helping us implement this plan to beautify and enhance the safety and functionality of State Street, for all to enjoy, well into the future. Your voice matters.
